ABOUT THE GAME

Spirited Suites was developed by a seven person team (Team Canned Gluten) as a senior project at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. The team developed an independent study class together to produce this project, and began work in their last semester. Spirited Suites was developed using the Unity Engine over a span of around 6 months.

ABOUT CANNED GLUTEN

Canned Gluten was first formed to compete in the College for Creative Studies yearly 48 hour challenge game and animation jam in 2019.  The name for the team was chosen as an amalgamation of two separate teams coming together from the competition the year prior. 3 members were previously known as Team Ghost In A Can, and the other 3 team members were known as Gluten Free Games. Together as Team Canned Gluten, they created their first game, Are You Sorry Yet, for the competition. The game was well received although unfinished, and became great encouragement for the team to continue creating games together throughout their college studies.

In 2020, the team came together yet again to compete in the CCS 48 hour challenge game and animation jam. Quack Therapy was the final product from the team. They were able to place second in the competition. The development of this game really helped to solidify the team's confidence and communication skills, and was a very good foundation to build off of for the future.

In 2021, most of the team members senior year, Canned Gluten competed for the last time in the CCS 48 hour challenge game and animation jam. This time, the team created SilverLineand again placed second in the competition. This production served as a starting point for Canned Gluten's Biggest project yet.

Directly after the completion of SilverLine, Canned Gluten was able to begin an independent study class together for their final semester of college. During that time, the production of Spirited Suites began. The game was originally planned to be a VR project, but  that idea was soon made impossible due to social distancing restrictions. The project developed into a third person puzzle platformer inspired by the likes of Captain Toad and Fez. The idea of using your dead body as an in game weapon began as a joke, but then soon turned into an integral part of the gameplay. The black and white visual style developed as a way to create cohesion between levels and around the environments in general. The school year ended while the game was still in production, but the team kept up development to achieve the final release version of Spirited Suites in July 2021.
